We all want to know that the corporations we buy from are behaving ethically and contributing to – not taking away from – a better society. In late 2019, Dell Technologies unveiled an ambitious plan to create a positive and lasting social impact worldwide. The plan featured new goals that build on a legacy of work embedding sustainability and ethical practices across the company.

Designing for the environment

Dell has made strong commitments to address climate change using science-based targets that cut across facilities, operations our manufacturing supply chain and even the use of our products in customers’ hands. Among these are a goal to source all electricity from renewables like wind and solar by 2040 and an effort to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half over the next decade and reach net zero emissions by 2050.

The Dell goals also look at how to reduce the impact of products and packaging using the principles of a circular economy. Among the most ambitious of these goals is the commitment that, by 2030, Dell plans to reuse or recycle a product for every one a customer buys. This “one-for-one” goal will help accelerate the company’s efforts to bring back materials so they can be recycled or reused again. Responsibly collecting the technology is only one part of the sustainability equation. Dell also plans to use 100% recycled or renewable materials for all packaging by 2030 and more than 50% recycled or renewable materials in products.

Let’s look at one example of how Dell Technologies is leading in their sustainability efforts with the company’s Latitude 5000 series of PCs.

What makes the Latitude 5000 series a sustainable PC option?

The new Latitude 5000 series are the first PCs to use Tall oil, a tree-based bioplastic in its design -- the computer’s lid contains 21% bioplastic content. We mix that material in with recycled carbon fiber and plastic for a total of 71% recycled or renewable content in our system lid.

By focusing on the heaviest and largest surface of the device – the lid – Dell was able significantly reduce the product’s carbon, water, and energy footprint, all while maintaining its high reliability, durability, and performance standards.

Dell estimates all recycled and renewable materials in the Latitude 5000 series will:

Reduce CO2 emissions equivalent to those created by driving 24.2 million miles (that’s more than 971 times around the Earth)

Save enough energy to power 5,564 homes for a year

Conserve enough water to fill 226 Olympic-size pools

Worth noting: All new Latitude 5000 PCs are ENERGY STAR® certified, and EPEAT® Gold and Silver registered, to help the user further reduce energy use.
