Dell EMC recently announced that they have added a new model to the industry leading PowerProtect DD series appliance portfolio, the next generation of Data Domain. From a capacity perspective the new DD6400, is positioned between the existing DD3300 and DD6900 models. The DD6400 is the next evolution of the DD6300 that sports compelling upgrades to performance, networking, and multi-cloud support.

The top line summary of the DD6400

The DD6400 starts at an entry level capacity of 8TB usable and can easily scale up to 172TB of usable capacity. It has been designed for the commercial and smaller enterprise market segments as well as remote sites for large enterprise customers. Just like other DD series appliance models, the DD6400 is available in all supported regions around the world.

The DD6400 is emblematic of true Next Gen Performance

The DD6400 delivers significant performance capabilities. In addition to offering available 25GBe connectivity ports, the DD6400 includes a hardware assisted compression card that typically delivers 30% more logical capacity per TB. This yields a data deduplication ratio of typically 65x*. This data deduplication ratio enables the DD6400 to provide up to 11.2PB of logical capacity when configured to the maximum usable capacity of 172TB. This represents a 25% increase in logical capacity from the previous generation appliance. Furthermore, the DD6400 will support throughput of up to 12.7 TB/hour - and when using DD Boost your customers can expect a throughput speed of up to 27.7 TB/hour.

Multi-cloud optimized - at no extra cost

A primary feature of the DD6400 is that it is multi-cloud optimized. The DD6400 supports Dell EMC Cloud Tier, which provides up to 2x the active tier for cloud capacity that can be used for long-term retention of data to public, private or hybrid clouds. Cloud Tier is included with the DD6400 at no extra cost. Simply put, if you purchase a DD6400 with 32TB of usable capacity, you will automatically get a license for 64TB of usable capacity with Cloud Tier.

The inclusion of Cloud Tier isn’t the only enhanced capability included with the DD6400. The appliance also ships with licenses for DD Boost and DD Replicator which offers your customers more capabilities from day one.

The DD6400 grows with your customers’ data

Like other DD series appliance models, the DD6400 allows for capacity expansion, enabling it to grow with your customers’ data. The DD6400 supports the ES40 shelves from Dell EMC and customers can add up to two expansion shelves as needed. The base system starts at 8TB usable capacity and allows it to grow in 4TB increments up to 32TB. The first expansion shelf grows from 32TB up to 104TB, while continuing to grow in 4TB increments. The second expansion shelf enables customers to increase capacity from 104TB up to the maximum configuration of 172TB usable capacity.

The DD6400 is a clear winner in customer data protection

The DD6400 is a modern, purpose-built backup appliance that supports the needs of commercial customers, small enterprises, and remote sites for large enterprises. With cyber security at the forefront of the IT landscape the DD6400 supports the Dell EMC PowerProtect Cyber Recovery solution. The DD6400 is also included in the Dell Technologies Future-Proof Loyalty Program to make sure your customers get the most out of their investment.

This is the opportune time to explore what the PowerProtect DD series appliances can do to expand your customers’ protection storage capacity, or as an upgrade for their legacy systems.

*When compared to previous generation. Based on Dell EMC internal testing and field telemetry data. April 2021. Actual results may vary.

Cyber-attacks threaten every market and the impact of being unable to recover critical data and resume business operations after an attack can be devastating. Cyber threats are causing trillions of dollars’ worth of damage, with Accenture forecasting over $5T of global value at risk over the next five years1.

The reality is that no business or organization is immune. Attackers target businesses of all sizes and across all industries. Organizations are often focused on guarding against a specific type of cyber-attack, but this narrow focus can put them at risk. Cyber-attacks take many different forms, and the attackers may have a variety of motivations, techniques and even platforms from which to launch their attacks.

The Dell EMC PowerProtect Cyber Recovery solution and ‘Business Resiliency Services’ provide the highest levels of protection, integrity and confidentiality for your customer’s most valuable data and critical business systems and are a critical component of a comprehensive cyber resiliency strategy.

Cyber and ransomware attacks are the enemy of today’s data-driven business. This is the very same data that cyber-attacks and ransomware target. Cyber-attacks threaten every industry, and the impact of being unable to recover critical data and resume business operations after an attack can be devastating. Cyber threats are already causing trillions of dollars’ worth of damage, and Accenture forecasts over $5T of global value at risk over the next five years.

Many organizations are moving away from a focus on cybersecurity and toward a more comprehensive approach known as cyber resilience. Rather than hope that they can defeat cyber threats 100 percent of the time, they are instead assuming that a cyber-attack will eventually succeed, and the organization will need to recover from the attack and then resume operations as quickly and cost-efficiently as possible. For enterprises to do this they need the ability to recover business-critical data and systems after a cyber incident, with unaffected or “clean” copies of applications and data sets intact.

PowerProtect Cyber Recovery has been designed to recognize and anticipate sophisticated threats

PowerProtect Cyber Recovery protects and isolates critical data from ransomware and other sophisticated threats. Machine Learning (ML) identifies suspicious activity and allows organizations to recover known good data and resume normal business operations with confidence. The benefits of PowerProtect Cyber Recovery are significant as they:

Reduce the business risk of lost data from cyber-attacks
Modernize data protection with intelligent and automated cyber recovery
Efficiently recover “known good” data and resume business operations

With innovative automation and intelligent tools, data can be easily isolated from the attack surface and protected in a dedicated secure vault.

How PowerProtect Cyber Recovery delivers is the unique differentiator

Isolation – Separating critical data with an operational air gap provides critical data, production, and backup environments with physical and logical isolation from attack surfaces
Immutability – Multiple layers of security and controls protect data against destruction, deletion, or alteration
Intelligence – Leveraging machine learning (ML) and analytics to identify recoverable data and offering insights into attack vectors from within the Cyber Recovery Vault

While the three of these components work independently, they will also work collectively, when necessary, within an integrated solution to provide the maximum levels of security and protection for vaulted data. This intelligent cooperation gives customers the best possible chance to recover vaulted data with integrity and confidence should an attack penetrate the data center.

Furthermore, PowerProtect Cyber Recovery protects data and provides recovery across on-premises and multiple cloud environments including Dell Technologies Cloud, as well as many other leading service providers such as AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform.

Why Dell Technologies for cyber recovery?

Dell Technologies has always been a driving force behind cyber resilience and technologies that support cyber recovery. Since 2015 they have productized and mastered their offerings and deployed these offerings in hundreds of customer enterprises across all geographies and industries.
